There are moments in life where you may find that you've tried everything and still feel like something is missing. People are telling you that what you're thinking and feeling doesn't make sense and you just need to choose to think differently (as if you didn't try that already, right?) You're doing everything you know to return to a place of clarity and peace... but there's something blocking the way.
The sad thing is that when the only answer people have for you is that you need to choose to think a certain way, and that doesn’t work for you, the results can be shame and hopelessness. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve talked to someone who said, “I’m thinking and feeling ___. I know I shouldn't. I need to focus on ___, but I try so hard and just can’t figure out how to make that happen.”
I get that feeling because that was me. I had done the mindset and thought life work for YEARS. And it was working!... until it wasn't. But I can tell you that there is hope, and there are more pieces to the puzzle that so many are unaware of.
Understand the 80/20 Principle
Your nervous system is a superhighway of information. 80% of the signals travel from your body to your brain and only 20% from brain to body! The reason we’re able to keep everything “under control” for so long is that we have a strong prefrontal cortex - the thinking part of our brain - that is able to direct and manage so much of what we’re thinking and feeling. But over time, the stress signals from our body and the internal wounds we carry within can start to get so “loud” that it becomes impossible to ignore. This results in anxiety and fear, depression and hopelessness, and continual tension and pain within the body.
Recognize any of those? That’s your body and your internal system just trying to get your attention! That it’s time to find another path to healing.
For When You Can’t Think Your Way Out
✨We've all heard of fight/flight/freeze, but how do we actually get back to feeling at peace?
✨And we've all been told to tell our inner critic or fear to back off, but it seems to come back even stronger... what if there was a better way?
There are moments when your nervous system is on "high alert" and your body is remembering what your mind has forgotten... this is why you can't think your way out of deeply held stress responses and physical tension. Having your nervous system on “high alert” means it’s chronically running in fight/flight. And the hurts we carry from the past can trigger and elevate that nervous system response.
You may feel agitated with your loved ones and lashing out at them in ways you’d never speak to anyone else. You may find that it’s impossible to slow down and relax when you get home from work - that you can’t “turn off”. Maybe it even takes you DAYS into a vacation to finally relax. Or things could go the other way where your nervous system is in freeze, and you find yourself continually exhausted and disconnected from yourself and those around you.
You’re not over-emotional, lazy, or weak. There’s just something biological and/or emotional going on under the surface!
Going Deeper is the Key
Going deeper with foundational nervous system and emotional health practices helps quiet the turmoil within, so you can return to a place of freedom, clarity and peace. I know it may have been your usual M.O. to just keep pushing and going, but if you’re reading this far, I’m betting that something is resonating and it’s feeling like it’s time to figure out another way.
The healing process within the nervous system allows your body to rest so your thoughts and emotions can become more clear. And understanding and working with the parts of us that carry wounds and burdens allows the heart to open and the mind to rest. In the end is a greater level of:
Who doesn’t want more of that?!?
